NEW DELHI: At 28, Ashish Samuel has more snatching cases against him than his age. He targeted many women in North Campus, Model Town and adjacent areas.
He operated alone, which police say is rather strange. Snatchers often come in pairs on motorcycles. The rider focuses on fleeing from the spot while the pillion rider does the snatching work. But Samuel is a stunt biker and could control his bike with one hand while snatching with the other, police said.
Samuel identified himself differently to different people. To some, he was Ashish, to others he was Harshi, George and Samuel. He took to crime when he couldn’t arrange money to watch a movie in the premium class with his girlfriend.
He began to steal bikes and commit snatchings. After stealing a bike, he would get its fuel regulator removed for uninterrupted speed during snatchings, police said.
In a short period, Samuel figured among ‘cagegory A’ history-sheeters in Bharat Nagar area. According to police, Samuel’s grandfather was a constable in Delhi Police and his family members live in Police Lines in north Delhi while he lives with his grandmother at the police colony in northwest Delhi. To dodge the police after every crime, he used to live with his relatives in the Lines for a few days.
On January 6, Samuel attacked a woman in Model Town and snatched her bag containing Rs 1 lakh cash, three gold and diamond rings, and a Samsung Note 9 phone. The woman told the police that a lone youth attacked her while she was on her way home.
“A team led by ACP Hukma Ram and SHO K P Sah was formed to track down this notorious criminal. The team scanned the footage of over a dozen cameras and identified the suspect. A raid was conducted by inspector Anant Kiran and others and the accused was nabbed,” said additional DCP (northwest) A K Lall.
Samuel said during interrogation that he would sell off the snatched cellphones to a shop owner named Naveen Honey. Honey would get the IMEI numbers changed before pushing them forward into the grey market. Naveen was arrested from his shop at Gaffar Market, Karol Bagh.
Policemen are looking for another cellphone seller who also purchased stolen phones from Samuel.
Samuel also abandoned the bags he snatched after emptying their contents. The money he made this way funded his cine-going habits.
His father works at a Delhi government department and stays at Bharat Nagar. Samuel’s mother died when he was a child.
Special CP, law and order (north), Sandeep Goel, was all praise for the police team and said they would be rewarded.
