AMBALA: Two days after thieves struck at an ATM of State Bank of India here, onduty security guard Rakesh Kumar has changed his statement after the police interrogation.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sultan Singh said, “The incident occurred around 4.30am. Earlier the guard had said it happened around 2am. As we suspected his statement, we questioned him again. And now he says he was not on duty and sleeping at his house, which is just five minutes from the ATM, when the incident took place. The second statement seems to be true. Out of fear, both the security guards — the one onduty and the other of morning shift, Rampal — had cooked up a story initially.”

Rakesh had said on Tuesday, “I was on duty at the ATM kiosk. Around 2am, I opened the shutter to answer nature’s call. Suddenly, three persons came from behind and caught me.”

‘ATM guards under watch’

Rakesh had said on Tuesday, “I was on duty at the ATM kiosk. Around 2am, I opened the shutter to answer nature’s call. Suddenly, three persons came from behind and caught me. As I shouted for help, they made me smell something and I fell unconscious. In the morning, the other guard woke me up from inside the ATM cabin.”

The cops have released the security guards, but they are under watch.

On Tuesday, thieves had opened SBI ATM near Manav Chowk of Ambala with a gas cutter and fled with Rs 19.76 lakh. The DSP said similar robberies had taken place recently in Rohtak as well. Three teams are working on the case.
