Overseas cruise tourism has witnessed major growth in Cork, which has churned out immense financial benefits. This has been achieved through formal group effort with the cruise lines to recognize their approach and deliver quality product to the passengers when they land in Cork.
Cruise tourism globally has shown remarkable growth in terms of passenger numbers in recent years. There are 110 new build cruise ships anticipated to enter service in the coming decade, which will boost up passenger numbers universally by more than 50%. In Britain and Ireland, the demand for cruise itineraries has shown particularly strong growth but, with the Brexit debate achieving a vital stage, it is important for cruise and port industries to work together as a team to carry on with this trend. Also, it is important in setting up a dialogue between port and cruise lines, so that they can work together on an agenda allowing sustainable growth over a long period.
In spite of the significant developments being planned in port facilities, the destination remains the key driver in influencing the cruise passenger’s decision to buy a specific cruise. Majority of the European ports are urban and bridging the gap between the port and the city is one of the prime disputes, mainly when it comes to monitoring the environmental impact of the cruise activity.
