The case against Harpalpur was registered on November 2, 2018, on a complaint filed by a widow from Ghanour, who had alleged that he had first duped her of Rs 35 lakh, by not giving her the money after selling her property. Later, he had raped her, she alleged. She had also accused the Akali leader of threatening her family with dire consequences.
Harpalpur, who is a cousin of SAD MLA from Sanour, Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra, had been accused of misleading the 40-year-old widow into selling her property. She had stated that while the property, which was 13 bigas and had been sold for Rs 50 lakh, Harpalpur only gave her Rs 15 lakh. When she demanded the remaining amount, he had raped her, she said.
However, SAD MP Prem Singh Chandumajra and his MLA son HS Chandumajra have termed the arrest as politically motivated.
