Ambiguity over NU’s reval fee refund, exam fee waiver persists

Nagpur: The Nagpur University has failed to clear doubts among students over refund of revaluation fee and late fee waiver for those who are declared pass after the revaluation results. The issue came up for discussion before the Academic Council on Tuesday.
NU top officials said the decision in this regard has already been taken and late fee is not charged from students in case they manage to pass after revaluation. Also, such students are not levied late fee for their next exam since the revaluation results are declared after the form filling deadline.

Officials told the council members that students need to fill a claim form for refund of the revaluation fee.

However, even though the explanation was put before council members, NU has never issued guidelines or notification in this regard. Lack of specific guidelines has left students at receiving end of college and NU’s exam section officials.

The issue was raised by Tarzan Gaikwad in Senate meeting from where it was referred to the council.

Last year, TOI had reported about the Nagpur University exam section’s refusal to refund the revaluation fee charged from these students despite orders from vice chancellor SP Kane. Most of the students, whose earlier scores were in single digits, got their marks increased as much as by 15 marks, proving the fault in valuation of answer books.

This is the second consecutive year when the exam section failed to implement the VC’s pet project. Asked about the move, Kane has always reiterated that students will be refunded if they apply. But, the process has never been publicized by the NU.

Also, the exam section officials are not on the same page as far as refund or late fee is concerned. The exam section is of the view that not the entire fee can be refunded but a deduction will be done while on late fee it is silent.

In October, 2016, VC Kane had proposed to refund revaluation fee in case of increase or decrease of marks. But, the project has failed to take off.

On October 5, 2017, TOI had highlighted how the exam section officials were caught off guard when successful students sought refund of revaluation fee citing VC Kane’s commitment.
