PUNE: A police constable suffered severe injuries, while two others escaped with minor wounds after they were beaten up by a mob near the Wakad police station on Thursday afternoon.

Constable Pramod Bhandwalkar, attached to the Wakad police, suffered fracture on his right hip-joint after the suspects beat him up with sticks. The Wakad police have arrested five men from Mhatobanagar slums and have launched a manhunt for over 20 people, including women. Constable V S Kudal, who suffered minor injuries in the attack, lodged a complaint.

Two groups from Mhatobanagar slums had a brawl over writing about a woman in lewd language in a public toilet and gathered near the police station. Bhandwalkar, Kudal and other policemen intervened after noticing a person brandishing sharp weapon. “When the policemen went there, both groups attacked them,” said senior inspector Satish Mane of the Wakad police.
