On Thursday, joint teams of the fire brigade and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) seized illegal gas cylinders from the Bombay Gymkhana in Fort and the Cricket Club of India in Churchgate.
In December, the civic body had increased inspections of residential and commercial premises across the city to look for fire safety violations. Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta had given orders for joint inspections by the BMC and fire brigade ahead of the first anniversary of the fire tragedy at the Kamala Mills Compound. Staffers found violations in commercial establishments even on New Year’s Eve and necessary action was taken.
On Thursday, the fire brigade found illegal use of three LPG cylinders in Bombay Gymkhana’s staff canteen. They also found seven compressed air industrial use cylinders in the main kitchen. P.S. Rahangdale, chief fire officer, said, “The notice will be issued for other deviations after receipt of the inspection report under Section 6 of the Fire Act.”
Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner, A ward, said, “The staff canteen inside Bombay Gymkhana had applied for an eating house licence a few years ago, but it was rejected as they did not have the requisite area. The gymkhana was found to be having LPG cylinders today and they were removed immediately.”
The teams also found 41 LPG cylinders inside a cabinet in the Cricket Club of India. One loosely connected LPG cylinder and one cylinder of refrigerant gas were also found. As the CCI staffers could not produce the fire brigade’s NOC, the cylinders were seized.
Mr. Rahangdale said, “Additions, alterations were on on CCI’s second floor, where there is a lodging. The staffers failed to produce an NOC from the Building Proposals Department. A notice will be served to the CCI.”
