The Mormugao municipal council has decided to conduct a fresh survey of all the scrapyards which are operating within its jurisdiction, ensuring safety of people and those residing in the close vicinity.

Speaking to this daily, MMC chief officer Agnelo Fernandes said, “As per records available with the council, following a survey conducted earlier, there were 17 scrapyards operating  within the jurisdiction of this council, however it has come to our notice that more illegal scrapyards have mushroomed”.

The MMC chief officer further disclosed that the municipal authorities have issued orders to all scrapyards on March 6, 2009 directing them to remove their scrapyards within the next 7 days. He further disclosed that some of the scrapyards had earlier obtained licenses which were not renewed from the year 1998, following the directives of the High Court of Bombay at Goa to shift them outside the residential areas and away from the municipal jurisdiction.

In order to ensure safety of people, the council has therefore decided to conduct a fresh survey of all scrapyards.

“The assistant municipal inspectors are directed to conduct a fresh survey of all scrapyards operating within the jurisdiction of the council and submit a compliance report within the next 7-days”, stated Fernandes in a note issued to the assistant municipal inspectors on Thursday.
