Pakistan vs South Africa 3rd Test Day 1 highlights: Double blow by Philander puts South Africa in control

After wrapping up South Africa for 262 in their first innings, Pakistan end Day 1 at 17/2. Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Abbas will resume the Pakistani innings on Day 2. 

Just the start South Africa would have hoped for, Vernon Philander strikes twice in consecutive deliveries. Both Shan Masood and Azhar Ali were dismissed caught-behind as Pakistan reach 7/2. Mohammad Abbas is the new man at the crease. 

The players are out in the middle as openers Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood are set to start the Pakistan innings. Dale Steyn will start the proceedings for the hosts.

Faheem Ashraf takes the final South African wicket as the Proteas manage 262 runs in their first innings. A short-delivery and Duanne Olivier tries to pull. However, the ball clips his top edge and goes up in the air towards fine leg. Mohammad Abbas runs for the catch and comfortably hold on to it. 

Quinton de Kock goes for the big shot but he fails to clear the boundary ropes. The ball goes staright to Mohammad Abbas standing at deep square leg, who takes the catch comfortably. The South African wicketkeeper-batsman departs after scoring 18. SA: 262/9

Hasan Ali does the damage as South Africa lose their eight wicket. Kagiso Rabada attempts a drive but the ball takes an outside edge and goes straight into the gloves of Sarfraz Ahmed. Rabada dismissed for 0. Dale Steyn is the new man at the crease. SA: 261/8

Hasan Ali strikes as South Africa lose their fourth wicket in the final session of the day. Vernon Philander tries to flick but he misses it completely and the ball hits his pads. The entire Pakistan team appeal for LBW but the umpire is not convinced. After a brief chat with the bowler, Sarfraz Ahmed signals for a review and it turns out to be a good one for Pakistan. Philander walks back to the pavilion after adding only 1 run on the scoreboard. Kagiso Rabada walks to the middle. Meanwhile, Quinton de Kock flicks the ball through mid-wicket and it travels to the boundary. With this boundary, South Africa edge past the 250-run-mark.

Mohammad Amir strikes again as South Africa lose their sixth wicket. A doubt whether to strike or leave the ball has cost Zubayr Hamza his wicket. The debutant walks back to the pavilion after scoring 41 runs in 68 deliveries. Vernon Philander is the new batsman at the crease. PAK: 244/6

Slight movement and Mohammad Amir provides Pakistan with another breakthrough. Temba Bavuma nudges the ball and it takes an outside edge and travels straight into the gloves of Sarfraz Ahmed. Bavuma departs after scoring eight in nine deliveries. Quinton de Kock arrives in the middle. SA: 238/5

Mohammad Abbas strikes as Theunis de Bruyn is dismissed LBW. The batsman would surely be dissapointed with himself after falling one run short from completing his half-century. Temba Bavuma is the new batsman at the crease. SA 237/4

The ball takes an inside edge off Hamza's bat and carries to the keeper but Sarfraz Ahmed fails to hold on to the ball. Pakistan lose an opportunity to break the partnership as Hamza survives on 38. 

South Africa have taken a solid position in the Test. Theunis de Bruyn and Zubayr Hamza have taken the side to 226/3 at Tea. This has been a day for Proteas so far.

Pakistan introduce Asad Shafiq into the attack as South Africa reach 213/3. Theunis de Bruyn is playing on 43 while his partner Zubayr Hamza is on 30.

LUNCH! Hundred run stand between Amla and Markram to take South Africa to a comfortable 108/1 after the first session. Markram on 78 and Amla on 22 for a 102 run stand

Ninth boundary of the innings and Aiden Markram looks to be in the zone for a big score here. Creams the drive through cover off Faheem Ashraf and it brings up his fifty from 72 balls. South Africa on to 79/1

Three boundaries in the Hasan Ali over and it produces 13 runs. Markram the man behind it. Open faced punch beyond point to get the first boundary, back punch through gully next and then a cross batted through mid-wicket

Makram with twin boundaries to Abbas. Notices a pitched up delivery and goes fully forward on a knee to go through the line in drilling it away through extra cover. Ball later he converts a bouncer into a four. A top edge, a fine one at that and it has gone away for a four

Second over of the Test and Dean Elgar walks back after scoring 5 runs. Set up perfectly by Abbas. Good length delivery, just outside off and Elgar decides to flirt for a fleeting second, and by the time he reconsiders, it's too late. No foot movement either and it is a simple catch for Sarfraz.
