A fire broke out in building no. 50 at Omkar Co-operative Society in Tilak Nagar at 6.15 p.m. on Wednesday. No casualty has been reported. The fire broke out in the fridge at the house of M. Raja on the second floor of the building’s A wing.

The mattresses in the bedroom caught fire and an elderly woman in the house managed to escape. Two fire engines arrived at the spot and doused the blaze by 6.50 p.m. The building did not have a firefighting system and BMC officials from the M West ward could not confirm if it had the necessary permissions.

P.S. Rahangdale, chief fire officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade, said, “Illegal parking and traffic posed problems for our fire engines, but we reached the spot immediately. A fireman, Sudarshan Pawde, sustained minor injuries to his leg. He was treated in a private hospital and discharged.”

Five people had died in a blaze in another building in the area last month.
