Sip more than a cuppa at this Coffee Santhe

BENGALURU: Specially brewed coffee from 13 regions across India, jewellery made of coffee, clothes fitted with coffee-bean buttons and brewing competitions between all-woman baristas. These are among the attractions awaiting visitors at the 5th edition of Coffee Santhe, which will be held from January 11 to 13 at Orion Mall, Rajajinagar.
The festival, organised by the Women’s Coffee Alliance-India Chapter (WCA-I), is expected to draw nearly 10,000 visitors. Entry is free and visitors can walk in between 10am and 9pm. The santhe will feature 60 stalls from leading coffee growers from across the country. In addition to tasting a wide variety of coffee blends, visitors can attend workshops on coffee brewing, sustainable coffee growing and how to use brewing equipment. Art contests and games will also be held, said the organisers.
“People often associate Indian coffee with the traditional filter coffee blend. The aim is to show people various kinds of coffee, the taste of which varies with the region, growing and brewing techniques and the ways in which it can be used — from cascara which is made of dried coffee skin and bread made of coffee beans to coffee artifacts and accessories to adorn your homes,” said Sunalini N Menon, founder member, WCA-I.
WCA-I is affiliated with the International Women’s Coffee Alliance, a global organization that works towards empowering women who are part of the coffee value chain.
During the three-day extravaganza, visitors can sip specially brewed coffee from across the country, including Karnataka districts like Chikkamagaluru, Sakleshpur and Belagavi. The Women Stars Brewing Skill Championship will require baristas to conjure up inventive coffee blends in addition to the traditional types — cappuccino and espresso.
The fest will be attended by coffeemakers and brewers from across the globe, including Kellem Agnew Emanuele, president of International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA); Phyllis Johnson, president of BD Imports, a US-based supplier of green and roasted coffee; Mary Allen Lindemann, co-owner of Coffee By Design, a specialty coffee roastery based in Maine and Simon Green, a ‘coffee trainer’ based out of the UK.
