Sports everyone.
Just 39 years old, matt lafleur now has the keys to get green bay back to being a championship contender.
The packers introducing him today as the 15th head coach in franchise history.
For both sides, now it's time to get to work.
News 8 sports director gregg wavrunek has more from green bay.
Packers president and ceo mark murphy looked for two big things when searching for the packers next head coach.
One - make sure he's a great fit.
And two - that this job makes that person genuinly excited.
Murphy was pretty sure he found the right man after sunday afternoon's interview and monday's follow up phone call.
"brian and i called him and so, called him on the phone and i said matt, i'm really excited.
I'm going to offer you the position as our head coach.'
And it went kind of quiet and i thought oh, geeze, the connection break?'
And the first thing matt said was i'm speechless.'
So i knew then that was an genuine excitement."
"it was incredible, i mean when i tell you i was speechless, i was speechless because there is just so much tradition here and i can't think of a greater place to be a head coach in this league and really of all of sports.
This is, this is a dream com true for me."
Murphy said lafleur was the best prepared candidate when it came to knowing the packers.
The team also snags someone with background in working with two of the current greatest offensive minds in the game in sean mcvay and kyle shanahan.
"i know this, i'm going to lead and i'm going to be my own person.
The way i lead is going to be different than kyle, it's going to be different than sean.
And i think the only way to lead is you better be true to yourself.
These players are extremely smart and you better be real and you better be honest and that's exactly how i'm going to be with these guys."
Most importantly will be striking up a positive relationship with quarterback aaron rodgers and get him performing back at an m-v-p level.
"i think we are both on the same page.
We are committed to winning there's no doubt about it.
He's a competitor and i can not wait to get started with him."
If it wasn't for lafleur shining in his interview... who knows where the packers would be right now in their head coaching search.
Murphy saying no one really stood out until they sat down for their tenth and final candidate.
After that it was a unanimous decision to hire lafleur among him, brian gutekunst, and russ ball.
