Re-promulgation of triple talaq ordinance cleared
TNN | Jan 11, 2019, 03:45 ISTNEW DELHI: With the legislation to make triple talaq or instant divorce punishable stalled in Rajya Sabha, the Cabinet on Thursday approved the re-promulgation of the ordinance. The earlier ordinance was to expire on January 22.
While the reworked bill criminalising triple talaq, which has provisions such as complaints being filed only by the affected wife or a provision for bail at the stage of the magistrate hearing the case, was approved by LS, a clear lack of numbers prevented the government moving it in Rajya Sabha.
The first ordinance was issued in September last year. The opposition had demanded that the bill be examined by a select committee, a proposal the government did not accept.
