260 trees face axe as NU okays indoor stadium
Sarfaraz Ahmed | TNN | Jan 11, 2019, 03:18 ISTNagpur: Under pressure, the Nagpur University management council led by vice chancellor SP Kane on Thursday approved the demand of former para-athlete Vijay Munishwar-led committee to shift the proposed indoor stadium or multi-purpose hall to its lower campus near Subhedar Hall. The move entails felling of 260 full grown trees on the land off Amravati Road.
The Management Council agenda didn’t carry any mention about the change in plan or need to cut the trees to pave way for the Rs10 crore project funded by the Union Minstry of Sports and Youth Affairs.
Kane said the Senate members had assured that much more than the mandatory compensatory plantation would be done at affiliated colleges. “The senate members have promised that 2,000 trees would be planted at colleges premises for the 260 felled ones. Once the compensatory plantation is complete, the university would get the security deposit back,” Kane said.
The NMC had raised a demand of Rs28lakh security deposit against the proposed felling of 260 trees.
On December 14, TOI had reported about the mystery over the project’s location as the PWD had finalized the stadium plan. The PWD prepared the plan for the land adjacent to pharmaceutical sciences department on NU campus and the state agency is ready to execute work in January if the NU authorities clear the proposal.
The NU administration had shifted the Rs10 crore project to its upper campus to save around 260 trees while the senate members led by Munishwar wanted the stadium at lower campus near Subhedar hall. The project was also not feasible due to lack of parking facility in case the stadium comes up.
Munishwar, who is chancellor’s nominee on the senate in sports category, had contested NU’s plan to construct the stadium on campus, during the senate meeting held in October.
He was supported by veteran senate member Baban Taywade. Munishwar had demanded that building the stadium near NU’s pharmaceutical sciences department would “inconvenience outstation athletes and players to reach the venue”.
The aggressive members had forced the NU top brass to assure Munishwar that a committee led by him would reconsider the plan which would require shifting the project back to lower campus on Amravati Road.
The much-delayed stadium funded by the Union Ministry also face the risk of losing the Rs6crore if utilization is not started before December 2019.
