Woman dies due to ‘faulty’ treatment

VADODARA: A woman residing in the Lunawada taluka of Mahisagar district died at the SSG Hospital (SSGH) here because of complications arising out of a cotton mop left behind in her abdomen during a caesarean operation at a private hospital in Lunawada.
The woman Geeta Khant (33) was a resident of Malekpur Padadi village in Lunawada taluka. She had gone to the state-run Cottage Hospital in Lunawada town for a regular check-up. She was referred to the Aarohi Maternity Home in the town for the delivery.
According to an emergency police report (EPR) at the SSGH, Khant underwent a caesarean operation at the private hospital in the early hours on Saturday and delivered a baby boy. On Monday, she developed complications and her abdomen began swelling. She also complained of pain and started vomiting.
In wake of her deteriorating condition, Khant was rushed to the SSGH Tuesday. She was operated at the hospital and a cotton mop measuring 20cmX25cm was removed from her abdomen. In wake of the development, doctors at the SSGH asked her husband to inform the casualty medical officer regarding the incident and an EPR was registered on Wednesday.
Khant had been kept on a ventilator at the SSGH as her condition was serious. She died at the hospital on Wednesday. The Lunawada police has also been informed regarding the development and will take further action.
