The Forest department has opened three temporary depots — two in Tiruvarur and one in Mannaragudi — in the district to stock logs of teak and other trees that were uprooted by Cyclone Gaja last year.
The cyclone brought down about 80,000 trees in the district, and temporary depots had to be opened to accommodate the wooden logs from different locations.
A huge chunk of the fallen trees constituted teak, which was raised alongside canals.
The immediate priority was to safeguard the logs of the fallen trees along the canals. Even small-sized poles were being stocked as they were used for making furniture, District Forest Officer Arivoli said.
So far, 300 lorry loads of logs had been transported to the three temporary depots, he said.
Replanting of teak would be carried out along the canals once the government sanctioned funds, the officer added.
