Labour department official arrested while accepting bribe of Rs 11,200

Coimbatore: A deputy inspector of labour department was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 11,200 from a businessman on Thursday.

The official was identified as Vijayalakshmi, 57.


Panneerselvam of Sulur, owner of Theivam Calibration Accuracy at Pappampatti Pirivu near Sulur, had applied for the renewal of his firm’s licence before the labour department. Vijayalakshmi demanded Rs 11,000 for the renewal. The businessman approached the sleuths of the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC), who laid a trap.


Panneerselvam handed over money laced with phenolphthalein powder to Vijayalakshmi, when she visited the firm on Thursday. DVAC sleuths caught her red-handed. She was booked under some sections of the prevention of corruption act.
