‘Consent from the Department of Home needed for any such move’

The Tamil Nadu government is yet to take a decision on permitting special shows at theatres for movies scheduled for release during the Pongal festival, Minister for Information and Publicity Kadambur C. Raju said.

He was in Sivakasi to unveil a statue of S.R. Naidu, popularly known as the Father of Education in Sivakasi.

He told reporters that permission for special shows will be given only after obtaining consent from the Department of Home. “So far, no such permission has been given,” he added.

Pricing norms

Mr. Raju said the State government had been taking steps to prevent cinema halls from fleecing movie-goers.

The government had intensified the imposition of a ₹50,000 fine on theatres for violating the maximum ticket fare norm for the first time.

The fine amount is ₹1 lakh for violating it for the second time. “The license of the theatre is cancelled if the violation is found for the third time,” he added.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami will take appropriate steps to fight against the reopening of the Sterlite Copper unit in Thoothukudi in the courts, he said.
