Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono paid a courtesy call on Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli on Thursday during which he discussed with them the issues of bilateral and mutual interests.

During Foreign Minister Kono's meeting with Prime Minister Oli, various aspects of Nepal-Japan bilateral relations, regional and global issues of common concerns were discussed, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"While sharing the recent political achievements and priorities of the Government, Prime Minister Oli appreciated the Government of Japan for its continued support and cooperation in socio-economic development of Nepal," it said.

Foreign Minister Kono assured him of Japan's continued assistance to Nepal in realising its development goals, it added.

On Wednesday, Kono held talks with his Nepalese counterpart Pradip Gywali.

The two sides also signed the Exchange of Notes for revising the Air Service Agreement.

"The signing of the Exchange of Notes will pave the way for the operation of direct flight between our two countries," the ministry said.

Similarly, a Memorandum of Cooperation was also signed between the two sides on conducting bilateral consultations.

The Memorandum of Cooperation will provide a platform to both countries to discuss modalities for extending the cooperation, review all aspects of bilateral relations, explore new areas of cooperation and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual concerns.

"We also discussed about bilateral cooperation for the implementation of projects in Nepal related to infrastructure building, connectivity and energy," Gyawali said after the meeting.

"We also discussed the Japanese investment in priority sectors of Nepal and active participation of Japanese investors and entrepreneurs in the upcoming Nepal Investment Summit to be held in March 2019," he added.

The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on sending Nepalese labour forces to Japanese labour market under new immigration policy introduced by Japan, according to the statement.
