TDB told to exclude protesters from rally
tnn | Jan 10, 2019, 23:45 ISTThiruvananthapuram: A directive from Pathanamthitta district police chief to Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) commissioner regarding issuance of passes for accompanying the thiruvabharanam (sacred ornaments) procession in Sabarimala has led to a confusion among stakeholders.
The letter issued by the DPC T Narayanan said that the devaswom should not issue passes to those who actively participated in protests related to Sabarimala women entry issue and those involved in criminal cases.
The directive created confusion among many as it was interpreted that all those who had participated in the namajapa protests will have to stay off the procession.
There were rumours that the member of the erstwhile royal family of Pandalam—who has to accompany the procession as per an age-old custom— will also be excluded as per the directive.
The police had asked TDB to introduce identity cards to all non-police members who would take part in the procession— from Pandalam palace to the temple— on Saturday.
Representative of the Pandalam royal family, Sasi Kumara Varma said that they have spoken to the police and the TDB president and has cleared the matter.
“We have spoken to Pathanathitta police chief as well as the TDB president. They have assured that there won’t be any problem and only those who have been implicated in serious criminal cases will be denied clearance,” Sasi Kumara Varma said.
Police said it is a routine directive and now, since the protests against women entry has become a burning issue, it is natural that it will also be mentioned in the letter.
“Only those who have been charged under various sections for serious criminal cases like the attack on the police will be excluded from the procession. This has been conveyed to all authorities concerned,” Pathanamthitta SP T Narayanan said.
Man commits suicide hours after son’s arrest :
A 65-year-old man committed suicide after his son was arrested on Thursday in connection with the violence reported during hartal on January 3.
Mohanan Pillai Kochupanthadiyil, Padinjattekkara, Thevalakkara in Kollam committed suicide by hanging from a tree on his house premises by 4.30pm on Thursday.
Pillai’s son Manoj Kumar was arrested by Chavara police for attacking Anees (25), a native of Nettiyad during the hartal.
Pillai is survived by wife Anandavally and another son Manesh.
