CET to go online; no clarity on rollout yet

BENGALURU: GT Devegowda, minister for higher education, on Wednesday said the government will conduct the common entrance test (CET) for engineering seats online. The government conducts CET every year for nearly 1.8 lakh students who intend pursuing engineering courses or graduation in agriculture science or pharmacy.
“We intend to take all competitive examinations conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) online,” the minister said.
“As part of this effort, we will conduct CET online from next year.” The minister did not clarify whether CET will be conducted online from 2019 or 2020. There was also no clarity whether students will have to appear for the exam at designated centres, cybercafes or from their homes. He said the department is scheduled to meet KEA officials on January 19 to discuss details.
“KEA and universities have the necessary infrastructure to conduct CET online, but they require software to implement the proposal,” Devegowda said. “We will soon develop the software.”
‘Taking CET online will prevent leaks’
Gowda said conducting the exam online will eliminate issues which generally arise during paper-pen examinations, including question paper leaks and human error, while printing question papers and evaluating answers.
Karnataka CET has four papers — mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology — and students can opt for either mathematics or biology depending on the course they wish to pursue. Each paper is for a total 60 marks.
If the move comes to fruition, CET will join the ranks of other competitive examinations like NEET (medical) and JEE (IITs) at the undergraduate level and CAT (MBAs) and other competitive examinations at the postgraduate level which are conducted online.
