MUMBAI: Six GRP constables have been booked for forgery. They had added the name of a passenger to the non-cognizable (NC) offences register after fearing they would get a rap from superiors for charging money from the man without receipt.
An inquiry is on and the constables are likely to be arrested and face suspension. The six, identified only by their last names—Kute, Koli, Pol, Gholap, Chavan and Survase—on Monday rounded up 10 passengers on a Harbour local for illegal travel in the luggage coach. At Wadala station, the 10 were taken to the GRP outpost and an NC offence registered against them. Later, a senior officer released them with a warning.
In a report filed by the constables, the names of only nine passengers were mentioned. The NC register too had nine names and signatures. These names were entered into the online database CCTNS. The next day, senior officers received a complaint that some constables had charged Rs 300 from a commuter, Abbas Khan (27), for illegal travel in the luggage coach and not given him a receipt. Khan was summoned to the Wadala GRP outpost by an officer. When he walked in, a few constables told him he had forgotten to sign the NC register. They got him to sign on a page where his name had been added below the names of the nine listed passengers.
