Lal Bahadur Shastri entered politics at a young age as a satyagrahi in the Indian independence movement. He was awarded the 'Shastri' bachelor degree by the Kashi Vidya Peeth in Varanasi. The word 'Shastri' remains etched in the minds of the people as part of his name. Shastri became Prime Minister in 1964 after Nehru died while still in office. He successfully led India during the war with Pakistan in 1965. He coined the slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' during this time. Shastri reportedly suffered a heart attack after the signing of the Tashkent Declaration that aimed to restore peaceful relations between India and Pakistan after the 1965 war, and later died in the Uzbek city. He was the first posthumous awardee of the Bharat Ratna, which is India's highest civilian award.
