Cops inspect mining site after complaint

LUDHIANA: High drama was witnessed at the banks of Sutlej river in villages Hadiwal and Bairsaal on Wednesday after cops reached the riverside to conduct inspection of the area. following a complaint about the illegal mining in the area. Though sources said the team conducted the checking on the basis of complaint about illegal mining in the area, officials remained tight lipped about the entire exercise.
Police sources said that vigilance department had got information from Forest department about illegal mining being carried out by miscreants in Hadiwal village on the bank of river Sutlej and in a demarcated area in Bairsal village of Nawanshahar. They added that acting on the information, cops from Vigilance department and Ludhiana police reached the spot.
Sources however added that it was still not clear if the mining was being carried in unauthorised area, though there were JCB, tractors and vehicles at the spot, some of which were loaded with sand.
Meanwhile a forest department official confirmed that a complaint was given to Koom Kalan police alleging that illegal mining was being carried in Hadiwal village. He added that the police didn’t take concrete steps to mining after which matter reached vigilance department that raided the area. Despite repeated attempts DSP Vigilance Mandeep Singh Sandhu could not be contacted.
