CHENNAI: A day after a city jeweller complained of 13kg gold and 67kg of silver articles and jewellery missing from his shop, a police team on Tuesday boarded a Delhi-bound train at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh and arrested two men, including his former employee. After they were brought to Chennai with the stolen goods, a court sent Hansraj Singh and his cousin Harendra Singh, both from Uttar Pradesh, to jail.
Around noon on Monday, Santhosh Kumar Gautham Chand, 31, of Old Washermenpet, had discovered the jewellery missing from his safe. A case was registered and a team scanning CCTV camera footage saw two men walking out of Santosh Kumar’s house-cum-shop with a gunny bag around 2am on Monday. Suspecting that one of them could be Hansraj, police launched a search and found he was absconding.
“We got information about the suspects going to Delhi and decided to intercept trains headed there,” said north zone joint commissioner of police Prem Anand Sinha. The JCP spoke to RPF divisional security commandant Gandhi, his batchmate, and sent him photographs of the suspects. One team boarded a Delhi-bound train but failed to find the suspects. Later, 10 RPF personnel boarded the Madurai-Hazrat Nizamuddin Sampark Kranti Express at Tenali, about 31km from Vijayawada, and found the two men to an unreserved compartment.
The duo was nabbed and the booty recovered. A team from Chennai later took custody of the suspects.
