MUZAFFARPUR: One Sujit Kumar, allegedly involved in the murder of former mayor of Muzaffarpur municipal corporation Samir Kumar, surrendered before the Town police station here on Wednesday.
Samir was the very first mayor of the corporation, who along with his driver Rohit Kumar, was gunned down by criminals on September 23 near Chandwara area under Town police station when they were returning home.
Confirming his arrest, Muzaffarpur SSP Manoj Kumar said that Sujit’s arrest would help police to spill the beans in ex-mayor murder case. “He had surrendered following mounting police pressure. The CCTV footages of the incident helped us to identify him. He along with Govind had fled on a motorbike after killing Samir with sophisticated weapons,” said the SSP.
Sujit’s name also came to the fore in a confessional statement of a property dealer Sushil Kumar Chhapadia, who has been arrested in a forgery case. “Chhapadia, who has been made an accused in the case, had revealed Sujit and Govind’s name apart from another accused in the case SN Mishra. Mishra had hired two sharp shooters of notorious Shambhu Mantu gang to kill Samir after a dispute surfaced during a deal over a plot of land,” the SSP said.
The SSP added that police would try to take Sujit on police remand and interrogate him. He, however, said Sujit’s associate Govind has already been arrested from Panta airport by the Special Task Force (STF), Patna, on December 18 last. Meanwhile, a transporter Navin Kumar has also been detained by the Town police station in this connection. Navin is said to be the nephew of notorious gangster Mantu Singh of Shambhu Mantu gang.
SP (city) Rakesh Kumar said, “Navin is being quizzed after detention. He has been detained on Pintu Singh alias Mrityunjay Kumar’s statement, another transporter in police net for reportedly providing AK-47 to Sujit and Govind,” said the SP.
