PUNE: Three Standard III students travelling in a school bus suffered injuries on Wednesday afternoon, while 11 others escaped unhurt when it tipped over on the service lane of Katraj-Dehu Road bypass at Ambegaon Pathar after its brakes failed.
Police said the bus was on a slope on the service lane when its driver realized that the vehicle’s brakes were not functioning.
In a desperate attempt to stop the bus, the driver slowed down and steered it to the bushes dotting the service lane. The front wheel of the vehicle hit a huge stone and collided against a tree, resulting in the bus turning on its side in front of Podar International School.
The bus of Podar Internationl School was on way to the institution after picking up students from Dhankawadi and adjoining areas for the afternoon shift. As the accident occurred in front of the school, the institution’s authorities, security guards and passers-by rushed to the site to rescue the panicked students, crying aloud.
Anagha Gholap, the school principal, told TOI, “We were shocked to hear about the accident. All the students are safe.”
The principal said, “There were 14 students in the bus. It had almost reached the school premises when the accident occurred around 12.30pm. All the students on board were Standard III students of the afternoon shift of the school. Three of them suffered bruises. The school management will investigate the matter. The school bus is eight-year-old and has a fitness certificate valid till April 27, 2019.”
Policemen of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station and Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials rushed to the spot after the accident. Inspector Vishnu Tamhane of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police said, “Prima facie, it has been revealed that the accident occurred because of non-functioning of brakes of the bus. We are awaiting the RTO’s inspection report.”
A senior RTO officer told TOI, “We are conducting an inspection of the school bus. We have asked the school not to press the vehicle into service for a few days. The inspection will reveal the cause of the accident.”
