Golden Gloves boxing tourney begins Saturday

The Police Athletic League of Fall River, Inc., will be hosting the 56th Southern New England Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament. The annual event will take place at the PAL Hall, 31 Franklin St. in Fall River, beginning this weekend.

To date 50 boxers have registered, and the athletes come from throughout southern New England. Participants range in age from 16-34 years old and there will be approximately 10 bouts nightly.

The  preliminaries will begin Saturday, Jan. 12, with the semifinals taking place Saturday, Jan. 19. The finals will be Saturday, Jan. 26, and tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 508-636-6173. Ticket sales will also be available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. Prices are $25 for January 12 and January 19, and $30 for the finals. Further information may be obtained by contacting Deputy Police Chief Charles J. Cullen, president, at 508-672-9197.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first bout is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. There will be alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available at the bar along with food from the snack bar.
