2nd swine flu case in 8 days, both critical

LUCKNOW: The second swine flu case of city within eight days of this year was reported on Tuesday.

The patient is a 70-year-old woman from Bada Barha in Alambagh. Her condition is critical and she remains on a ventilator at a private hospital in the city. She was diagnosed with hepatitis C and had fractured her hip on December 17 after which she underwent a surgery. The woman developed chest infection and had difficulty in breathing post surgery on December 28. She was put on ventilator on January 5 after her condition deteriorated.

On January 5, a 53-year-old man, a resident of Faizabad Road in city, had tested positive to swine flu. He also remains on ventilator at a private hospital in city.


The samples of both these patients had been sent to SGPGI where they were found positive in laboratory tests.


Meanwhile, the health department claimed that the family members of the two patients have been given precautionary medicines, N-95 masks and briefed about preventive measures.


The department also held a meeting on swine flu management at the office of the chief medical officer on Tuesday. The health department teams will visit schools and tell children to use their elbows and not palms while sneezing and coughing as that limits the spread of swine flu infection. The department will use the slogan “Cough and sneeze, elbow please” for awareness on swine flu.


In charge of vector borne diseases control unit, Lucknow district, Dr KP Tripathi said, “Two swine flu cases have been recorded in city since January 1.” In 2018, the city recorded 19 cases; 2,192 cases and 14 deaths in 2017; 46 cases in 2016, and 1,087 cases in 2015.”
