Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had a narrow escape after his convoy was involved in a serial accident on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway on Wednesday.

The incident took place near Gowdahalli Gate on the outskirts of Srirangapatna. According to police sources, some persons in the convoy suffered minor injuries.

The former Chief Minister was on his way to Mysuru from Bengaluru. A goods carrier was parked on the roadside following a breakdown and the driver of one of the convoy vehicles applied sudden brakes, which led to the serial accident. At least six vehicles suffered minor damages.

Mr. Siddaramaiah escaped unhurt as his driver managed to apply brakes in time, a senior police officer said.

The vehicles were travelling at a speed of 110 km per hour when the accident occurred. A major mishap was averted as all the vehicles were fitted with ABS, the officer said.

The incident led to chaos on the highway for a while. As the news of the accident spread, hundreds of Mr. Siddaramaiah’s fans from surrounding areas thronged the place.

Meanwhile, assistant reserve sub-inspector of police Mari Gowda (56), who filed the accident complaint on Wednesday morning, died of a massive cardiac arrest at his residence here in the evening.

Mr. Gowda was in one of the escort vehicles that met with the accident and had escaped unhurt.
