NEW DELHI: Gold worth over Rs 2.6 crore was seized and four persons arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) by the Customs department in three different cases.

In the first case, a South Korean national was intercepted after arriving from Seoul on Wednesday. A baggage and personal check of the passenger revealed four gold bars concealed in a zipper-belt pouch that he was wearing. Custom officials said the case is similar to another recovery made on January 3, when a South Korean was caught with the same amount and on the same airline.

“The same route was followed and in both cases, four gold bars weighing 4kg were being smuggled. The modus operandi also is the same and we are now trying to find a connection. It is possible this may be part of a larger smuggling racket,” said a Customs official.

In the second case on the same day, two Indian passengers were caught after arriving from Dubai. They were carrying gold in the form of cylindrical rods, which were painted silver before being concealed in a torch. “Gold weighing 2.6kg was seized with a market value of around Rs 84 lakh,” said an official.

In the third case, a man was intercepted after arriving from Riyadh on Tuesday. A total of 15 gold pieces were recovered from him.
