LUCKNOW: Presence of mind and quick decision-making by a man not only saved him from a loot but also led to the arrest of two miscreants posing as policemen in Chowk on Tuesday.
Gonda-based businessman Dinesh Gupta said he knew of the racket of fake policemen by reading newspaper reports regularly.
Over the past year, the city has witnessed 35 incidents in which miscreants posing as cops have conned innocent people of cash or jewellery.
The incident occurred around 2pm in Rakabganj as Gupta was driving through Kundri Bazaar.
Two men on a bike intercepted his car and asked him to get off as his vehicle was registered in Gonda. The duo claimed to be from the crime branch and asked Gupta for his driving licence. They also ‘warned’ him that the stretch was prone to loot. The two then demanded Gupta’s wallet, leading to suspicion by him.
“I got a whiff of them being conmen at the sudden demand. I told them it is in a bag in the boot of my car. I got down and discreetly dialled 100. I told the police my location and car number. All this while, I kept pretending that I was looking for my wallet while engaging them in conversation. I also offered them dry fruits. In about five minutes, the police arrived and intercepted us,” said Gupta. The miscreants tried to flee but were nabbed by the police.
SHO Chowk Umesh Srivastava said the miscreants were identified as Samir and Atiq Khan of Wazirganj. They have been booked for cheating, forgery, dishonestly and loot.
