CHANDIGARH: The committee constituted by the Panjab University senate to frame guidelines for the proper implementation of the 24x7 girls’ hostel decision will hold a meeting on January 14. The official order for enactment of the senate decision will be notified by the dean student welfare (DSW) office after the meeting.
“The committee will discuss issues related to the implementation of the senate decision during the meeting and the order will be notified thereafter,” said DSW Prof Emanual Nahar.
According to the sources, there is still confusion over keeping the mobility register at the hostel gates throughout the day or only around 11pm.
On December 15 last year, the senate had given a nod to the demand for 24x7 open girls’ hostel on the condition that the students going out after 11pm will have to make an entry in a mobility register which would be maintained by the hostels. The students’ protest on the issue had lasted for 48 days before the senate took the decision.
It was in the same senate meeting that a committee under the chairmanship of senator Navdeep Goyal and office-bearers of the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) besides other members was formed to look into the issues related to the 24x7 open girls’ hostel move.
Following a three-and-a-half-hour long discussion, the senate members had decided that the practice of charging fine for late entry of girls will abolished at all hostels. Since the protest was meant to end gender discrimination, the same rule was applied to boys’ hostels.
PUCSC president Kanupriya and the SFS had organized a general body meeting on October 11, 2018, where the issue of 24x7 open girls’ hostel and other issues were discussed. On October 29 last year, they had released a charter comprising the demand for 24x7 open girls’ hostel listed on the top.
They had also started a sit-in protest outside the gate of girls’ hostels 3 and 4, which eventually became the permanent protest site.
A call of gate break was also given by the protesters for October 31 and the students led by Kanupriya opened the gates of hostel number 3 and 4 at 9.30pm, after the curfew timings and marched across all the girls’ hostels and raised slogans of azadi from patriarchy. The protest had continued till late-night.
