Nagpur: The stretch from Law College Square to Laxmi Bhuvan square is all set to buzz again as ‘Happy Streets’ — an event organized by The Times of India — will return from January 20. Introduced to the city first in March 2015, Happy Streets works on the concept that citizens should be able to reclaim the roads for activities other than driving.
Happy Streets promises three hours of fun and frolic from 6am to 9am on Sundays. A couple of hours of traffic free roads when citizens can reclaim them is the need of the hour say Nagpurians. Termed as an activity that involves total collapsing of borders, building of community and being very inclusive and positive Nagpurians are welcoming its return.
“The activity added a new dimension to the city as it brought together a lot of different activities that when combined together offer an exhilarating experience,” says cycling enthusiast Anirudha Raich. Happy Streets gives a taste of the outdoors and promotes physical activity even among those who do not find time for it.
“It makes people fitter, reduces medical bills and encourages sports activities,” felt Kishor Tutheja a businessman who actively took part in all editions of Happy Streets.
Not just physical activities, Happy Streets are open also to singers and musicians. “The environment which builds when such a large audience is present to hear different artists is unique. I loved performing there and I am happy that it is being revived,” said classical vocalist Chitra Modak.
Even for performers of live art, Happy Streets provides a unique canvas. “We artists are always looking for opportunities for painting novel images. This activity with its vibrant and diverse crowd provides artists like us a wonderful platform which is difficult to find anywhere else,” says Kishor Ingle a faculty at government arts college.
