NEW DELHI: An NRI couple, heading to the airport in a hired cab, was robbed at gunpoint by a group of youths who waylaid them on the Ring Road near Pitampura early on Friday. The couple, along with the man’s brother, were robbed off their jewellery, mobile phones and cash.
DCP (outer) Seju Kuruvilla said that a robbery case has been registered and teams are pursuing multiple leads to arrest the suspects.
The complainant, Vikas Kumar (29), told police that he had booked a cab to go to IGI airport to take an early morning flight to Ahmedabad, along with his brother Yogesh Kumar and his wife Astha Gupta.
Vikas told officers that the cab driver was driving slowly and they asked him to drive faster as they were getting late. The driver, however, stopped the car to wash his face. Minutes after resuming the ride, a silver Wagon R — bearing registration number DL 2C 0852 —intercepted their cab at around 2.50am.
In his statement, the victim said that four men came out of the Wagon R and surrounded them, armed with guns and knives.
“They held my brother at gunpoint and threatened us to handover all valuable items that we were carrying,” Vikas said. The accused took away four smartphones, Rs 36,000 and their suitcases, which contained gold and silver jewellery.
Before fleeing, the men snatched the cab’s keys and drove away towards Peeragarhi. The family, left shocked and without any money or means to contact, returned home initially and then went to Mangolpuri police station to get their statements recorded.
The investigating teams recovered CCTV footage from a nearby housing society in which the whole incident was captured. The footage shows a speeding car overtaking the cab and stopping it. Then, the accused men come out and hold the family captive, threatening them with their weapons. After looting them, the men are seen running back to their vehicle and driving away.
Police said that they are further scanning the footage along the Ring Road to ascertain the direction the robbers took. Details of the Wagon R car are also being generated to track its owner. The teams are also questioning the cab driver for more details.
