Lead anti-BJP coalition, AIUDF urges AGP
Naresh Mitra | TNN | Updated: Jan 10, 2019, 10:15 ISTGUWAHATI: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has appealed to Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which has severed ties with BJP, to form an anti-BJP coalition in the state.
“AGP has taken a significant and important step by coming out of the alliance in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, despite being in alliance with BJP. It is high-time all anti-BJP forces unite and come under a single platform,” said AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who represents minority-dominated Dhubri constituency in the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday.
Ajmal added that six months ago, AIUDF had told AGP to come out of the alliance as the bill not only contradicts the Assam Accord but also undermines the state’s identity by granting citizenship on the basis of religion. “We welcome the regional party’s move as the state is passing through a crucial juncture. BJP went against the spirit of the Assam Accord and the sentiments of the people of the state by pushing the bill,” said the AIUDF chief.
He added that now AGP should take the lead in bringing all the secular forces under one platform to give shape to an an anti-BJP plank.
AIUDF general secretary Haidor Hussain Bora said prior to the assembly polls, his party had approached AGP to form a broad anti-BJP coalition. “It did not fructify then as AGP later allied with BJP. Now that AGP is out of the alliance, it should give a serious thought to our proposal of forming an anti-BJP platform. Let AGP take the lead,” said Bora.
