New Opel Mokka X Arriving With PSA Underpinnings And EV Variant For 2020MY

The next-generation Opel Mokka X has been snapped undergoing testing in the run-up to an expected global premiere late this year.

PSA Group has been working on a new-age Mokka X for quite a while now and is eager to update the car which came to life while Opel was still under the ownership of General Motors.

According to our sources, PSA had considered retaining the GM underpinnings of the Mokka X for the vehicle’s second-generation. However, Vauxhall chief Michael Loscheller revealed earlier this year that the GM architecture was too heavy and doesn’t offer electrification, forcing the car manufacturer to use its own platform for the car.

This platform will probably be shared with the Peugeot 208, DS3 Crossback, and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa,  making the next Mokka X longer by roughly 30 mm (1.18 inches), most of which will be concentrated on boosting rear legroom.

Another significant difference between the forthcoming Opel Mokka X model and the previous-generation variant will be the drivetrain. Whereas the current vehicle can be purchased with all-wheel drive, it seems increasingly likely that front-wheel drive will be the only available option for the new model. Also differentiating the old from the new will be the availability of a battery-electric Mokka in its updated guise.

The Opel Mokka X is certainly in need of an update.

These images depict the 2020 Opel Mokka X with the same level of camouflage it had earlier next year. Consequently, very few of the vehicle’s exterior panels can be analyzed due to the camouflage and additional body cladding. The headlights and taillights are also hidden from view.

Despite this, it’s obvious that the shape of the vehicle has been altered quite dramatically and the increased size is also apparent.

If the new Opel Mokka X does indeed premiere next year, it will likely hit the market as a 2020 model.
