VW Reportedly Considering A Small Electric SUV With A 205-Mile Range

Consumers can’t seem to get enough crossovers, but Volkswagen’s upcoming ID lineup is largely focused on passenger cars. That, however, could change in the future; Auto Express is reporting the company is considering an entry-level crossover to slot beneath the ID Crozz.

Little is known about it right now, but the publication says the crossover will be about the same size as the T-Cross. This means we can expect it to measure a little over 13.1 feet (4 meters) long.

If it materializes, the small crossover will ride on the MEB platform that has been specifically designed for electric vehicles. Thanks to the platform’s clever packaging, the new model could have more interior room than the T-Cross even though the two models have similar exterior dimensions.

Given the model’s compact size, it will reportedly be offered exclusively with a 48 kWh battery pack. That’s significantly smaller than the 60 kWh battery that comes standard in the Chevrolet Bolt, but it should be good enough for a range of 205 miles (330 km) according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure.

Like the Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona Electric, Volkswagen’s electric crossover would only be two-wheel drive. However, the model’s single electric motor would power the rear wheels instead of the front ones due to its architecture.

If it gets the green light, the compact electric crossover could be launch early next decade and would reportedly be built at Volkswagen’s plant in Emden, Germany.
