PUNE: As many as 147 patients availed the benefit of artificial leg implant during the free health camp 'Jaipur foot' in the city. The International Association of Lions Clubs jointly with Ahmadbad based Rajasthan hospital provided the implants.
In addition to this, the needy patients were also provided with polio callipers, walking sticks, kneecaps, surgical boots, crutches, waist belts and wheelchairs. The camp was organised at the Mahavir Pratishthhan at Salisbury Park in Pune.
Ramesh Shah, district governor of the Lions Club said, "The Lions Club has always been taking the lead in social service. Lion Hasmukh Mehta had started this Jaipur foot camp for needy patients. Today thousands of patients are treated and in future this number will surely increase."
Deepak Sethia, district chairperson of the Lions Club said, "We got good response. Around 500 people availed the benefit during the camp. The patients participated in the free surgical treatment for the lips, ears and nose which were broken or scraped. The camp was totally free. Patients coming from outer parts of the city were provided with free accommodation and food. Volunteers planned the whole camp very well."
The 'Jaipur foot', also known as the 'Jaipur leg', is a rubber-based prosthetic leg for people with below-knee amputations. It is inexpensive, robust and widely acceptable as a prosthesis, and as a result it has been widely used in India.
