Prime Minister Narendra Modi today assured the people of Assam and North East that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 will not “compromise” their rights. “Yesterday, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in Lok Sabha. I want to assure people from northeast & Assam that their rights will not be compromised with this decision,” PM Modi said at a public rally in Maharashtra’s Solapur. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, and if passed by Rajya Sabha, it will facilitate the granting of citizenship to certain minority communities in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Bill has become a socio-political issue in Northeastern states, especially Assam, where people fear that the Bill could lead to influx of immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh. Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a traditional political party in Assam, even withdrew its alliance from the ruling coalition led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after it failed to convince the latter to drop the Bill.
