MEERUT: Police on Tuesday arrested three persons for allegedly assaulting a 40-year-old woman over a payment dispute on Sunday. A video of the incident uploaded on the social media by an spectator — who had captured it on his phone — shows at least half a dozen men raining blows on the woman until she falls unconscious.
As the woman gained consciousness, she filed a police complaint against four persons. An FIR was later registered against all the accused and three of them have been arrested, police said.
Baraut CO Ramanand Kushwaha said: “The woman was brutally beaten by some men in Odhapur village a couple of days ago. An FIR was registered under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with aim to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Three accused Shariq, Jaan Mohammad and Saqib have been arrested. The fourth, an unidentified man, is yet to be traced.”
According to police, the woman identified as Farmeen, a resident of Odhapur village, owed a considerable amount of money to a shop owner from where she used to purchase fodder for her cattle. The shopowner had been repeatedly asking for the money from her.
SP Baghpat, Shailesh Kumar Pandey, told TOI: “The attack was a result of the dispute between the shop-owner and the woman. Her condition is stable.” Despite repeated attempts, Farmeen could not be contacted.
