GREATER NOIDA: A 39-year-old businessman, who went to a police station allegedly posing as a top official of the I-T department to get his shop at GNS plaza in Surajpur vacated, has been arrested. Abhay Bahl had a fake ID card of the Union finance ministry but the name of the parent service on it was wrong, and that’s how he was caught.
Police said Bahl, a resident of Noida’s Sector 15A, identified himself as a chief commissioner of I-T at Surajpur police station, but flashed an ID card of an IAS officer — unaware that such positions are occupied by Indian Revenue Service officers.
“On Monday morning, I got a call from Bahl who posed as a top I-T official and said he was facing some problems with his tenant. I became suspicious and asked him to come to the police station,” said SHO Muneesh Chauhan.
“Around 9.30 pm, he arrived at the police station in a car. When I asked him about his problem, he flaunted his fake ID card with ‘chief commissioner, ministry of finance, government of India’ and ‘IAS’ written on it. I immediately understood his ID card was fake. He also fumbled when asked about his parent cadre, joining year etc,” he said.
Vineet Jaiswal, SP (rural), said they found recorded calls in his mobile phones in which he could be heard threatening another public servant in a different department to get his work done. “During interrogation, Bahl told police he was unemployed after being forced to wind up his chemist shop some months ago following financial losses,” he said.
Police have seized his fake ID card as evidence and booked him under sections 170 (impersonating a public servant), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 419 (punishment for cheating by personation) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
“The accused was produced in a court and sent to judicial custody on Tuesday,” said Jaiswal.
