The Santacruz police on Monday arrested four men for allegedly accepting bets on the ongoing Big Bash League in Australia.
According to the Santacruz police, the accused have been identified as Bipin Shah alias Bipin Indraprasth (48), Jeetandra Jadhav (38), Narayanlal Rebari (24) and Devilal Jaat (40).
Paramjit Singh Dahiya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IX), said that the accused were arrested based on a tip-off. A team led by senior police inspector Shriram Koregaonkar learnt that a betting racket was being run in a residential building on Linking Road in Santacruz.
Mr. Dahiya said, “Our team raided the spot and found the accused in the room. Mr. Shah was watching the live telecast of the match and relaying information to someone on the phone, while Mr. Jadhav was working on the laptop. Mr. Rebari and Mr. Jaat were accepting bets.”
The police have seized ₹20,000, cell phones, a laptop, and a communicator, which allows relaying of real time updates to several phone lines. The accused have been charged under the Gambling Act and remanded in police custody till January 11.
