Quota announcement caught social justice ministry officials by surprise

NEW DELHI: It seems senior officials of the ministry of social justice and empowerment were not in the loop over PM Modi’s “surgical strike” for introducing reservations for the “economically weak” in government jobs, as well as educational institutions, both public and private.
For only on Tuesday when Lok Sabha passed the 124th Constitution Amendment Bill to provide for a quota for the general category; minister of state for social justice and empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar had ruled out the possibility.
“At present no such proposal is under consideration,” Gurjar said in a written reply to LS member Kotha Prabhakar Reddy.
This was brought up by Congress’s Ahmed Patel in Rajya Sabha on the Constitution Amendment Bill, to raise questions about “the style of functioning of this government”.
