Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition Announced For Chicago Auto Show

The first Mazda MX-5 Miata was shown to the world in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. Fast forward to today, and the automaker is celebrating 3 decades of the most popular roadster of all time with a special edition.

Called the Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition, it appears to have either a bright orange or red finish, if the teaser image is any indication, and will be unveiled at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, which kicks off on February 7 for the media, and two days later for the general public.

Over the last 30 years, the MX-5 has become an icon. Mazda parted ways with over 1 million units worldwide. These include more than 350,000 in Europe, where the roadster has an established fan base.

In the United States, the open-top model is being offered in three trim levels, Sport, Club and Grand Touring, with pricing starting at $25,730 (£20,183/€22,477) for the base grade. The MX-5 RF, which uses a folding hardtop, is available in the Club and Grand Touring specs, carrying an MSRP of $32,945 (£25,842/€28,781).

On the other side of the Atlantic, and more specifically in the United Kingdom, the MX-5 comes in a selection of five trim levels, named SE+, SE-L Nav+, Sport Nav+, Sport Nav+ 132PS and GT Sport Nav+. Pricing kicks off at £18,995 ($24,211/€21,152), with the MX-5 RF missing out on the entry-level SE and starting from £22,595 ($28,800/€25,160).

Joining the MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary at the car event in the Windy City will be other models from Mazda’s lineup, such as the Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3, CX-5 and CX-9.
