Ghaziabad: Recently back from Nigeria and looking for new a job, Brijesh Pandey (29) couldn’t believe his luck when a Washington-based shipping company offered him a package of $9,500, plus a house, car and food allowance.
He readily agreed and was sent an offer letter. It seemed all too easy; the company asked for no documents, but the elation of landing a good job convinced Brijesh to overlook these. But there was no such job — Brijesh, who had posted his CV on job portals, had become a target of a job fraud like hundreds of others.

An MBA graduate, Brijesh had served as a warehouse manager at a chemical trading company in Nigeria for several years. He was looking for a change and had returned home (he is a resident of Shauryapuram).

After he got the new offer, a woman called him claim, claiming to be a US embassy staffer, and and asked him to deposit Rs 35,000 in an account for visa processing. “After returning from Nigeria in mid-December, I posted my resume on several job websites. Within 15 days or so, I got this job offer on my mail from a shipping company in Washington in the US. The job profile was similar to my previous ones and was quite lucrative. So I readily agreed,” Brijesh said.

In the next 10 days, he received the offer letter. The interaction happened through mail and phone calls. “Lastly, they asked me to deposit Rs 35,000 to a bank account which was located in Delhi for visa processing. I sought to send a demand draft, but they insisted on online money transfer. I tried to send them money on Friday, but luckily my card got blocked for some reason and the transaction was not successful,” he said.

Even as Brijesh and his wife Shikha were contemplating their next step, a relative, who is a software engineer in the US, contacted the office of the shipping company and found no such job offer had been put out by them. He alerted Brijesh. The couple subsequently filed a police complaint. SHO (Kavi Nagar) Raj Kumar Sharma said police had started an investigation.
