Central trade unions strike: More than 300 protesters held in Trichy

TRICHY: Police on Wednesday arrested more than 300 protesters, who participated in the nationwide strike called by trade unions against the central government’s alleged anti-worker policies.
Those who protested were from various trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, LPF, AICCTU, AIUTUC, WPTUC, MLF and PTS.
At Trichy Railway Junction, around 50 agitators were arrested after they staged a rail roko and blocked Mayiladuthurai-bound Jan Shatabdi Express. Apart from this, road rokos and demonstrations were held in six other spots. More than 300 agitators – including 16 women – from all trade unions were arrested.
Road and rail rokos were held in other central districts too.
In Tiruvarur, several protesters reached new railway station around 11am and blocked Ernakulam Express train demanding that the BJP government bring back old pension scheme. As many as 86 people were arrested. Apart from this, road roko was held at two spots in the district.
Similar protests were held in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur districts. In total across the eight central districts, more than 2,300 people were arrested.
