A four-year-old boy has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after he was pulled unconscious from the water at a popular New South Wales lagoon.
He and his six-year-old sister were rescued at a lagoon near Avoca Beach on the NSW Central Coast at around 5.15pm on Wednesday.
In a separate incident two hours later, a two-year-old girl tragically died after she drowned in a backyard pool in western Sydney.

A witness at Avoca Lagoon told the Daily Telegraph the children were pulled from the water by a passing dog-walker.
Paramedics provided initial treatment with the help from surf life savers from the beach and off-duty doctors.
CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedics provided further treatment in order to stabilise the boy when they arrived at the scene.
He was airlifted by CareFlight to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in an induced coma.
His sister was taken to Gosford Hospital via road ambulance in a stable condition.
'CareFlight’s medical team praised all the responders for their quick responses and vital contributions to helping the children,' a statement read.
Meanwhile, emergency services were called to a home in Greenbank Drive, Werrington Downs, near Penrith just after 8pm on Wednesday night after a toddler was pulled unconscious from a backyard pool.

The two-year-old girl was rushed to Nepean Hospital, where she later died.
Nepean Police have established a crime scene and are investigating the incident.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
