Bill for 10 pc reservation to EWS tabled in RS amid ruckus

New Delhi, The Bill for ten per cent reservation for the economically weaker sections of society was on Wednesday tabled in the Rajya Sabha amid ruckus by the Opposition members on the citizen amendment Bill.

Soon after the House met at 1200 hrs following an adjournment, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh asked Minister for social justice Thavar Chand Gehlot to introduce the Bill in the Upper House.

Speaking after moving the Bill, Mr Gehlot, stressing the need for the Bill, asserted that Indian Constitution does not allow reservation on economic basis.

‘’Therefore, many poor people of general category miss out on opportunities.’’ he said.

Even as the Minister spoke on the Bill, the members of the Congress raised an uproar on the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Also moved in the Upper house was a resolution by Ms Kanimozhi of the DMK to refer this Bill to a Select Committee.

The Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday by a majority of 323 votes in favour and 3 against, seeks to provide 10 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions to the economically weaker sections in the general category.
