Madurai regional passport office issued 2.7 lakh passports in 2018, official says

MADURAI: As many as 2.7 lakh passports were issued through the regional passport office in Madurai in 2018, regional passport officer T Arun Prasad said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, Prasad said easing of rules for obtaining passports had led to an increase in the number of applications being made for passports in the region. The rules were changed at the end of 2016, and there was a surge of 22 % in applications in the year 2017 and a 10% increase in the last year, he said.
Prasad said post office passport kendras (POPK) had also helped the applicants. As many as 21,000 passports were issued through POPKs in 2018.
